(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement in response to the conditions set by the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (CNE) for a recall referendum in Venezuela. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“To no one’s surprise, the unconstitutional and unrealistic conditions laid out by Maduro’s CNE guarantee that the recall effort will not occur until after January 2017 which ensures the regime’s continued rule. This latest abuse of power will undoubtedly add fuel to the fire and it is incumbent upon responsible nations in the hemisphere to stand with the suffering Venezuelan people and sanction Maduro and his regime for this significant democratic setback. We must hold the Maduro regime accountable and ensure all political prisoners are released, humanitarian aid is delivered without the control of the regime, and Venezuelans can elect their leaders in transparent and honest elections. I call on our State Department to stop ignoring the sanctions at its disposal and freeze the assets and revoke the visas of all Maduro regime officials responsible for human rights violations and acts of corruption.”
